I wrote this out as a Twitter thread for a cosplay mutual and realized it could be its own blog post. This is for any cosplayers who are looking to start writing their own cosplay builds/progress/tutorials. From someone who’s been doing this for all her handmade cosplays since 2015.

With the recent surge of support to Black-owned businesses due to increased coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement, I came across two companies on Twitter who sell wig-adjacent products. That is to say: products used with wigs, but not wigs themselves. These companies were The Meya Store and The Renatural. Both companies are Black-owned companies based out of the UK. I had tried to sell prints and more graphic design commissions to no success. Hell, I hadn’t even received a single ko-fi donation yet. I lamented that maybe I was just not the type of cosplayer that people spend money on. I thought maybe people just didn’t like what I was selling. (I would later realized that–while maybe that is partially true–more of the blame could be on the fact I wasn’t exactly marketing my prints, graphic design, or ko-fi.)

Late July, I applied to the September issue for Cosplay Realm Magazine, a magazine with monthly themes that accepts submissions from cosplayers and does both digital and print versions of the magazine. The September issue theme was Nintendo, so I submitted my Detective Pikachu cosplay.

In my last blog post, I announced that I would be hosting my first ever panel virtually on my Twitch channel. Shortly after announcing that, a friend messaged me to tell me that the Semi-Formal Ball that they typically host at Animefest would be streaming online the same day as my Adobe panel.
