So you want to cosplay and you want to do it on the cheap. What can you do? Well, there’s actually lots you can do. You can wait for sales, become a coupon hoarder, and buy in bulk. You could buy a readymade cosplay on one of the many cosplay stores online (infinitely cheaper than making something from scratch). One other way? You could put your cosplay together yourself using the wonderful world of Thrift Stores. *angelic choir* Continue reading “Thrifting for Cosplay”
I Won an Award!
Last weekend, I entered my Maria Calavera cosplay into the Animefest Cosplay Contest. I hadn’t entered into a contest since my first one in 2016 when I cosplayed Korra during Kumoricon. (Kasey and I had entered the FanExpo contest with our Overcooked chefs, but I don’t count that since it was just a walk-on and not a craftsmanship contest.) Continue reading “I Won an Award!”
My First Time Judging a Cosplay Contest
This past weekend, I had the honor of getting to be part of the panel of judges for the Quakecon Cosplay Contest. Saturday of the con, I ran around helping get the green room set up, answered cosplayers’ questions about where they were supposed to be, and sat in a single room for 3 hours straight seeing all the different competitors. It was a fun, slightly exhausting, really eye-opening experience. Continue reading “My First Time Judging a Cosplay Contest”
Making My Maria Calavera Cosplay
As soon as I saw the episode that featured young Maria Calavera, a dual-scythe-wielding, silver-eyed all-around badass, I knew I wanted to cosplay her. Not only was her character incredibly fascinating, but her costume design was beautiful. I loved her colors, the Tabasco dress inspired attire, and all the little nods to Dia de los Muertos.

This isn’t my first time attempting this series. I set out to do this a few years ago with my “Meet a Cosplayer” series but ultimately came up short of my original goal. Originally, I was hoping to make it similar to my “Leaving Home” series, in which I sent questionnaires to be answered and then I would read them all and write one cohesive (chaptered) story.

Overcooked came out in 2016 and was an instant hit. I absolutely loved playing it together with Jason. I’d play it by myself sometimes when I’d get home after work before him cause I loved it so much.

Last year, Night in the Woods came out and I had the pleasure of watching Jason play through it. It’s a charming game full of heart, humor, and fun mini games. Recently, I finally got to play it myself and purposefully picked story lines that Jason didn’t so that I could see more of the game. It has amazing replay value because of this and I would love to play it again.

I’ve cosplayed Blake and now I’m cosplaying her momma Kali. She’s a super adorable cat mom so I just HAD to cosplay her! Also, she’s kinda tiny which I think works pretty well for me.

Start early, for the love of god
Jason and I got engaged September 2016. The wedding wouldn’t be until January 2018. But we moved in April 2017, so I effectively didn’t really start my dress in earnest until around June. I’m glad I started when I did because so many things changed and unforeseen problems would pop up. Also, mistakes were made.
