Meet a Cosplayer: Bliss AKA Truly Bliss

I met Bliss earlier this year during PAX South. We were both hanging out in the main area, taking a breather on some of the couches that were set up in between the main exhibition halls. She was wearing an amazing dress she made in the style of the Fallout video game series and I just had to ask for her picture. We got to talking and found out we both lived in Austin, so we friended each other on Facebook so that we could have some cosplay shenanigans together back in Austin!

Unfortunately, unknown to either of us, I’d be moving just two months after meeting her to the other side of the country. Despite that, we still keep up with each others cosplay progress on Instagram and Facebook. Hopefully one day soon we can meet up at another con! Until then, we’ll always have the internet.

Q: What was your first ever cosplay and how old were you?

A: The first cosplay I took to a con was Molly Hooper from BBC Sherlock

Q: What was the first con you ever attended?

A: Akon in Dallas

Q: Who or what introduced you to cosplay?

A: I’m not sure there was one thing that really introduced me to cosplay. Cosplay started being more mainstream online and I started making friends with people who cosplayed. They were beautiful enablers and it just rabbit holed after that.

Q: What is your favorite cosplay you’ve ever made?

A: I’ve always been partial to my Gaila, an Orion girl from the Star Trek films. Who doesn’t like painting themselves green.

Q: What cosplay was the most difficult to make? What new techniques did you learn from it?

A: My Iron Spider MJ was a beast. Learning how to craft with foam and PVC was intense. Thankfully there are so many kind people out there willing to share their talent and knowledge.

Q: What cosplays are you currently working on? When will you be debuting it/them?

A: I’m making a Winter Soldier USO outfit to meet Sebastian Stan in at Austin Wizard World at the end of September.

Q: What’s your one dream cosplay if budget/time/skill weren’t an issue?

A: So I would love to do an Ursula cosplay where her tentacles actually moved. That would be boss!

Q: What do you like/dislike about the cosplay community?

A: Don’t even get me started on the stigma plus size cosplayers deal with. But some of the relationships I’ve made through cosplay, I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Q: Who are your cosplay idols?

A: I’m not sure I have any idols but I am often impressed but cosplayers. Oh but if you don’t follow catcosplay and queenoffluna on Instagram you are missing out.

Q: Have you entered any contests? If so, how did you do? Would you do it again?

A: So I’ve entered some small contests and placed, which is flattering. But I haven’t entered anything in a while.

Q: When you’re not working on a cosplay, what do you do with your free time?

A: I work in a hospital which is always interesting. I also like bad scary movies and brunch with my girls.

Q: If you could give one tip to new cosplayers, what would it be?

A: Don’t worry, just have fun.
